Alexandria Surgent

The Bough Breaks

The relationships between parents and their adult children can occasionally be contentious, even in the best of situations. In rare instances, built-up hostilities — triggered by events real or imagined — erupt, with devastating consequences for everyone involved.

On Friday, December 8, 2023, forty-six-year-old Jeffrey Surgent was spending what started out as a pleasant afternoon in the company of his seventy-four-year-old mother, Alexandria, in the quaint seaside resort of Ocean City, New Jersey. Before sundown, one of them would be dead, slain in the most brutal way imaginable, and the other’s life would never be the same.

Since the investigation is still in the early stages, the events leading up to the shocking outcome have not yet been released to the public. What is known, is that Jeffrey phoned 911 at around 4:00 p.m. to report that he had killed his mother.

Before ending the call, Jeffrey had stressed to the dispatcher that he suffered from bipolar disorder and was not in control of his faculties when he committed the heinous act that was about to be exposed to the world. When officers arrived a few minutes later, they were met with a grisly sight none of them would ever forget.
