The Nightmare Begins

Rick Pacaccio awoke early on the morning of August 14, 1993, to take the family dog out for a walk, as was their routine. However, on this occasion, instead of opening the door and being greeted by a new day, he was horrified to see his daughter Tricia’s brutalized form lying crumpled on the back stoop.

Dropping to his knees, the distraught father tried to render aid, but it soon became clear that she was already gone. The medical examiner would determine that she had been stabbed at least a dozen times in what appeared to be a killing frenzy. Her heart, lungs, abdomen, collarbone and back had all sustained deep wounds and her left arm was broken, indicating that she had struggled fiercely with her attacker, to no avail. Skin samples from an unknown party were found underneath her fingernails and preserved for evidentiary purposes. Although there were no visible signs of rape, a sexual component to the crime could not be ruled out.

Detectives learned that the eighteen-year-old, who had only recently graduated from high school, had spent the last night of her life participating in a scavenger hunt in her hometown of Glenview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. From what they could gather, she had returned home in the early…
