Benson Xiong

When Wausau, Wisconsin, resident Heather Gardner left her sons in the care of their babysitter on the evening of October 18, 2018, she had no reason to think that she wouldn’t get them back safe and sound. Unfortunately, she couldn’t have been more wrong. The horrifying discovery she made a few hours later would turn out to be every parent’s nightmare.

Three hours after dropping them off, Heather met up with the babysitter, twenty-eight-year-old Marissa Tietsort, to retrieve her children. When the woman she paid to watch her sons handed her the car seat with two-month-old Benson already strapped inside, she had thought nothing of it. Bundled up from head to toe in a snowsuit, she had assumed that he was sleeping. After securing both boys in the vehicle, she had headed to the laundromat.

When Heather went to remove Benson from the car seat, she noticed that his limbs were stiff, and his jaw clenched shut. Realizing instantly that something was wrong, she had phoned 911.

A short time later, paramedics arrived on the scene to find a frantic Heather performing CPR on the infant. Taking over, they attempted to resuscitate Benson, but it was too late. It was evident to them that he was deceased and had been for at least a couple of hours.
