On the weekend before Christmas, 2024, Melinda Irizarry and her boyfriend decided to treat themselves to a few days at the Riviera Motel in Kissimmee, Florida to celebrate his birthday. Her five-year-old daughter was also along for the festivities.

That evening, the family ordered dinner from a nearby pizzeria. According to Melinda, the delivery had taken much longer than they had anticipated. She later told investigators that when the driver finally arrived with their order, her manner was abrupt, and the pizza was cold.

Dissatisfied with both the driver’s attitude and the state of the food, Melinda had tipped $2 on the $33 check. Alvelo had allegedly expressed her disapproval with a few choice words, and some eye rolling, before leaving in a huff.

At 11:47 that night, the family heard a knock at the motel room door. When they looked to see who was paying them a visit at such a late hour, two individuals dressed in black and wearing masks to hide their faces pushed their way inside at gunpoint. Though Melinda didn’t know who they were, she could tell that one was female and the other male.
