The Nightmare Begins

In the early 1970s, the good people of Fairfax County, Virginia were cautioned to keep their doors locked at night and to never go anywhere alone after dark. The events that prompted these words of warning began in the fall of 1970, in the weeks leading up to Halloween.

The first of many chilling incidents to come that would put the citizens of Burke, Virginia on edge occurred on Friday, October 19, when U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Robert Bennett and his girlfriend, who preferred to remain anonymous, set out one evening to pay a visit to the home of a close relative.

When the couple pulled into the driveway of Bennett’s uncle’s house on Guinea Road just before midnight, they were accosted by an imposing figure who emerged from the shadows carrying a shiny object in his hand. Within a matter of seconds, the man approached the car and raised what appeared to be a hatchet over his head. Before the stunned duo knew what was happening, he had smashed in the passenger side window, showering them with broken glass.

As the thoroughly shaken pair sat frozen to their seats, their attacker railed at them for trespassing on his land. Even though Bennett — who was legally parked on his uncle’s property — knew that the belligerent…
